Top 10 News 2005

The year 2005, a year of stormy weather, energy crisis but housing boom had finally come to an end. We are now officially in year 2006 with new year count-down and Rose Bowl Prade already took place. Before we turn our attention to the new year with promising economy, let's do a flashback looking at the top 10 news which shakes US or the world last year.
  1. Deadly Hurrican Hits U.S.: People around the world were shocked not just at how Hurrican Katrina had devastated New Orlean and surrounding states but also how the looters and refugees had turned a metropolitan of a top nation to a city of looters. What people don't understand is that the government been warned of the disaster had been warned of the disaster week ago.
  2. New Era for Catholics: Pope John Paul II died after 26 years of reining as the top religious leader of the world. Pope Bedict XVI assumes the role of bring peace to the world.
  3. London Subway Attack: On July 7 during rush hour in London, a city with sophisticated subway system, four terrorist bombers attacked three subway train and one bus to damage the public transportation system on retaliation of British join-force in Iraq War.
  4. A New IRAQ: over-thrown of Saddam Husseim's regime brings democracy yet also instability to Iraq. Pulling back of US troops and new election would bring the country into a new unknown destination.
  5. Mega Earthquake strikes India and Pakistan: In early October an earthquake measured 7.6 hit the border region between India and Pakistan killing 87 thousand people.
  6. Avian Flu Epidemic: although not a threat in US yet the deadly avian flu virus had claimed life of more than 35 people in Asia and could caused world-wide disaster if there's an outbreak globally. Drugs such as Tamiflu has been developed to counter the deadly flu.
  7. Energy Crisis: Hurrican Katrina not only caused loss of homes and lifes for people in New Orleans and surrounding coastal cities but also damaged offshore oil platforms. The disrupted refining capacity, Iraq War and increasing energy demand from China and India caused the gasoline prices to surged to more than $3 a gallan nationwide.
  8. Paris Riot: the poor Muslim population broke out into riot in Paris suburbs in October causing injuries and property damages. Debates raised afterward in France on race relations and religion.
  9. Gaza Pullout: after 38 years of occupation, Israel completed the pull-out from Gaza Strip in August.
  10. Deep Throat Revealed: Deep Throat, the secretive FBI official in 1970 who brought down Republican president Rihard Nixon during the Watergate scandal finally revealed himself - W. Mark Felt, currently 91 years old.
